Investing in Gold Certificates

Gold certificates are one of the most affordable investment vehicles for gold. Banks issue investors certificates that identify them as owners of gold bullion stored inside the bank on their behalf. These certificates allow investors to own gold without having to take actual delivery of it.

Gold certificates allow investors to avoid paying storage and insurance fees on their gold holdings. These certificates also have high liquidity, as selling one is simpler than selling gold bullion or gold coins.

Banks in Switzerland and Germany are the main providers of gold certificates today. The United States Treasury issued gold certificates as a form of paper currency until 1933. Each certificate entitled the owner to a corresponding amount of gold coins.

In 1933, the United States abandoned the gold standard and gold certificates were no longer considered legal tender. Today, U.S. gold certificates are considered collector's items.
